Your Right to Know as a Student

The Orange SUccess initiative was conceptualized during the University-wide Fast Forward Syracuse initiative and is in alignment with Syracuse University’s 2015 Academic Strategic Plan. It is an advising tool (web-based program) intended to improve the way we work across all schools and colleges as this system will allow us to help many more students be successful at Syracuse University.

Orange SUccess tools will be available across all colleges and schools Fall 2016. It provides an efficient way to quickly offer coordinated support to all students ensuring they receive the right type of assistance/intervention to keep them on track.

Student success is a significant lift for all of us that are supporting and teaching our students. Orange SUccess simply helps us understand who is at risk early and gives us the automation/tool to intervene and build cross campus communication and consistency.

  • Flags can only be viewed by you, the faculty/TA who raised the flag, advisors, and individuals in the office associated with the flag you received. Only you have access to your dashboard.
  • The Orange SUccess system does not police you, but rather embraces you and your success. The main goal of Orange SUccess is to help you engage and stay connected with your faculty and advisors.
  • The Orange SUccess system is not punitive. The main goal of using Orange SUccess is to help you be successful during your time at Syracuse University, as well as stay connected to Syracuse University community.
  • Orange SUccess is protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). Learn more about FERPA and the rights it affords..

Getting Started with Orange SUccess

The mission of Orange SUccess is to provide comprehensive tools for students to connect with Syracuse University resources. It gives faculty a way to track student progress throughout the semester to ensure the right people are able to intervene when they begin to display patterns of concerning behavior.

Orange Success!
Accessed through your My Slice account or through Blackboard, Orange Success is an information hub that allows students, faculty, advisors, and more, to communicate easily and efficiently. You can access Orange Success through My Slice or Blackboard on your desktop, laptop, even your phone!
Early alerts. Through Orange Success, students receive faculty compliments-known as kudos, acknowledging achievement and effort. Faculty can also alert students to possible issues, known as flags. Academic advisors can see all flags and information too, keeping everyone on the same page.
Orange Success clears hurdles, allowing for easier engagement. Before Orange Success, there were many different, and often confusing pathways to connect with the people important in your academic career. Orange Success clears those pathways, making for easier more efficiency in communication.
Orange Success helps you connect. Here, you’ll find all the people important to your academic success. You can ask questions in Orange Success. And, you can schedule meetings with faculty and advisors. It’s as easy as the click of a mouse!

      • Attendance Concern – Grade at Risk: Raise this flag when a student’s grade may be negatively affected by not attending class. Students and their advisors receive email notifications when this flag is raised.
      • Low Participation – Grade at Risk: Raise this flag when a student is not regularly participating in class. Faculty members define this in their class participation policy. Students and their advisors receive email notifications when this flag is raised.
      • Assignment Concerns: Raise this flag to alert the student that they have missing, late, or poor assignments. It is at the discretion of the faculty member to determine the type of assignments to consider when raising this flag. Students and their advisors receive email notifications when this flag is raised.
      • Low Quiz/Test Scores: Raise this flag when a student’s grades are below the course expectation. Students and their advisors receive email notifications when this flag is raised.
      • In Danger of Failing: Raise this flag when a student is in danger of failing a course. Students and their advisors receive an immediate email notifications when this flag is raised.
      • Never Attended: Raise this flag when a student has never attended your course.
      • Stopped Attending: Raise this flag when a student has stopped attending your course. (Last date of attendance required)

      • Outstanding Performance to Date: Raise this kudo to recognize students who have demonstrated academic excellence in a particular course. Students receive email notification when this kudo is raised.
      • Keep Up the Good Work: Raise this kudo to provide encouragement for students who are improving. Students receive email notification when this kudo is raised.
      • Showing Improvement: Raise this kudo for students who have had academic progress flags raised and have shown signs of improvement in their coursework and grades for a particular course. Students receive email notification when this kudo is raised.

    Orange SUccess enables you to exert significant influence and control over attainment of your academic and personal goals.

    To get started Login through MySlice (under Student Services > Ask for Help in Orange SUccess) or Blackboard (under Tools > Ask for Help in Orange SUccess (Students)) and make sure your profile information on the system is accurate. Verify or enter your email address, cell number, text messaging preference, and upload a new photo if you wish.

    Orange SUccess kicks in when you ask for help from your advisor or faculty member. You’re in control Your individual effort matters. You control your success. It starts when you ask for help in Orange SUccess.

    Students, faculty (and their TAs), and academic advisors can access Orange SUccess via MySlice and Blackboard, with specific roles and permissions in Orange SUccess. Faculty and TAs can raise early alert flags for attendance concerns, low participation, missing assignments, low quiz and test scores, and other performance issues. Academic advisors will follow up with the student, address or resolve issues, and close the loop with the faculty who raised the early alert flag. Faculty can also send kudos to students to recognize achievement. Students can ask for help from faculty in a particular course, or from an advisor for non-course needs. The faculty or academic advisor will be informed with an email and provide students coordinated support and point them to appropriate resources on campus. It is teamwork in every sense of the word.

    Student engagement with faculty, advisors and support staff is essential to a good educational experience. Orange SUccess is one of the many initiatives at Syracuse University which is geared towards improving the student experience. The Orange SUccess CONNECT feature has given students a mechanism to connect with their faculty, advisors, and others in their support network.

Getting started is easy. Every user will automatically have access to Orange SUccess through MySlice and Blackboard accounts. Find and click the link in the “student services” pagelet of MySlice or “tools” panel of Blackboard. After you sign in, you will find the Orange Success icon on the screen. For students, their Home page includes access to a customizable profile and personalized channels connected to faculty and advisors. Orange SUccess can also help you manage the steps you need to take to stay on track and meet your goals.

Update up your Profile

Begin by updating your student profile. Your profile lets faculty and advisors know who you are and how to contact you. It also gives you control over how you wish to receive emails. Click your name in the top right corner of your Home page to open your profile. Otto's Profile

From here, you can customize your profile by uploading a photo, setting appointment reminders, and adding a secondary email address for receiving Orange SUccess emails. Click the Both radio button associated with “Send my correspondence to”.

Once you have made your desired changes to your profile, click the Submit button to save your updates.

 

Dashboard

The right hand column of your Dashboard highlights items that require your attention and may include alerts related to your class work, recommended referrals to campus support offices to help you succeed, and Kudos from your faculty.

My Success Network

Click the My Success Network icon on your Home page to display your personalized network. This channel lists the people and resources that are available to assist you. (You can browse a broader list of available services in the Service Catalog). For each person or service listed you will find contact information, supporting websites, and, if online scheduling is enabled, a link to make an appointment. If a service includes a waiting room for walk-in appointments, you can click the “Waiting Room” link to find out how many students are currently in line.

Connect to people and services that can help you

ConnectPeople

The My Success Network and Courses channels display the people and services that are available to help you succeed. Here you can find key contact information as well as links to student service websites and online appointment scheduling.

Raise Your Handraise-your-hand

  1. Click the “Raise Your Hand” icon.
  2. Select either “I need an advisors help” or “I need help in a course”.
  3. In the details section please provide as much information as possible.
  4. Click the Submit button to submit your request when you are finished.

Courses

Click the Courses icon on your Home page to display information about courses you are enrolled in as well as contacts and available support related to each.

Like the My Success Network channel, it is personalized to show the people and services specific to the courses you are taking, and gives you the ability to request help related to a course.

Services Catalog

Certain counselors and advisors may be listed in your personal My Success Network channel, but other individuals and services can be found in the broader Services catalog accessed from the top navigation bar. On this page you can search for a service or scroll through the list of available services. For each service you can, view contact information, visit service websites, and schedule online appointments (if available).
